Ski resort in Greece? Are you nuts??? That was the reaction of people abroad when I tell them that I do ski in Greece and in particular in Vasilitsa.
Wel, not exactly a ski resort, more like a ski centre. Not very long ski runs but the scenery is magnificent and view from the top is breathtaking. You can see Mt Olympus from up there. Actually you can have great fun in Vasilitsa doing ski in powder and inside natural half-pipes and then you can go down to small villages of Smixi and Distrato and enjoy delicious local dishes … it sounds good, doesn’t it.

If there is a wide terrain to ski in Greece this is it. Snow conditions are most certain here relative to all other Greek resorts, as it almost always dumps from Adriatic moist W or NW. Beautiful natural environment. Unfortunately, not many high steeps for skiers. Ideal for snowborders.

Having been to several resorts abroad, mostly Austrian, I feel sorry that such a mountain (Vasilitsa) remains in the hands of incapable, indifferent people, who should have given the management to the Austrians who had previously come with an ideal plan: cable car from Smixi upwards etc, etc, etc.
But what can be done? I suppose I will continue to enjoy the wilderness and the steep slopes, though short, with my family.
I hope something is done in the future...

Amazing mountain, but always be prepared for the worst case scenario when you travel to Vasilitsa.

I have been to nearly all Greek ski resorts and there are three I think definitely outstand the others. Vasilitsa is surely one of them (Pigadia and Falakro are the others).

It may be not as large as an Alps ski area but for a nice day or weekend out it is really a good thing. First, the runs are much better, steeper and the snow cover is sometimes brilliant. The lifts are old but Ok, if there is a frosty wind which there often is you should dress very warm so that you don't freeze on your way up.
The staff is not fully trained and a bit disoganized but the people are friendly and will help you.
When there is good snow a snowparc is built up which is basic but fully sufficient if you don't happen to be a super crack.

I would also recommend Vasilitsa if you want to experience how Greek ski can be.

Have fun and we might meet on the slope!

A greek friend of mine, who lives near Grevena, suggested to take me to Vasilitsa in January. I did not know that skiing in Greece was possible and I was surprised how good it is! We had about 6 feet of snow and it was almost completely powder! Most lifts were operating an the Chalets were hostile. The view from the ski area was absolute magnificant, with a rugged scenery so that I almost felt like in the Alps. The ski runs were not really long but lots were quite steep.
The only shame is that there is no real village at the foot of the mountain like in the Alps. What about joining Smixi to the ski area with a cable car?

A ski resort consists of three elements. The mountain, the infrastructure and the people. So, one at a time:

    1. The mountain:
Is wide spread for Greek standards, almost always providing some part with good visibility and nice snow, even if the rest of the mountain is icy, slushy, or buried in the mist. The location is fantastic, offering lots of runs under the tree line and a wide open treeless face under the top lift. Pistes are basic, offering a few options for beginners, and early intermediates. Experts should immediately head off-piste. Many obvious routes, and even more hidden, await the adventurous rider. Snowfalls at Vasilitsa can be very impressive, sometimes even causing “trouble” to the resort’s operating ability.
What makes Vasilitsa the best [in my opinion] Greek resort, is the mountain’s “vibe”. Most of the riders are there just to ride, always willing to share riding knowledge with anyone willing to ask. This actually makes a difference, since in Greece 70% of ski resorts visitors, visit just to show off a new SUV, or a shining vinyl Mont Clair dawn jacket…

    2. The infrastructure:
Is basic and old. But, considering the day pass prices [10-13€] the deal is actually more than fair. Lifts are wisely placed, serving different sides off the mountain, offering different kind of terrain and even though they are slow and have small capacity, queues are not as long as in other Greek resorts [Helmos & Parnassos]. A few tiny chalets offer snacks at reasonable prices, and above all, the guys working there are nice, friendly and usually addicted riders themselves!
Magnetic card lift passes came in 2008 as a pleasant surprise. A small snow park is usually there, designed and maintained by local crews, but wherever you look, you can see either something natural ready to be hit, or something being built from riders for riders, and that is really nice.
What needs to be mentioned is the high quality of food, offered in the surrounding villages of Distrato & Samarina, in [surprisingly] reasonable prices.

    3. The people
People working in and around Vasilitsa are of course Greek, and this is “a priori” a significant disadvantage ad far as I am concerned. But, compared with the awful people in Helmos, and the blunt people in Parnassos, Vasilitsa has to offer something better. Maybe people working there are not 100% qualified and trained, but at least they are polite and probably try their best, even if sometimes their best is not good enough. Trust me, this is something!

As a conclusion: I would strongly suggest a visit to Vasilitsa, especially for off-piste riders. The place is beautiful, the mountain has lots to offer, cost is fair, and the vibe is great. You will enjoy it, for sure..

    PS
If I was granted a snow wish, it would be that Vasilitsa ski resort soon becomes privatized..

    SnowSquare from Greece

The location of the resort of Vasilitsa is beautiful and usually, the snow is adequate.

One serious drawback: the staff are clueless as far as running the resort is concerned. The lifts at Vasilitsa are poorly managed resulting in unbelievable queues during the weekends. Should you try to complain you'll receive apathy and rudeness.

Much better off if you visit Mt Voras Kaimakstalan or Vermio (3-5 Pigadia).

Probably the best snow center in north Greece (Falakro is the other). Good, lengthy runs. Some considerably faster lifts, nice views but rude people..big queues during the weekend, semi-working during the week provides only 3 out of 7 lifts.

    Lost-in-snow from Greece

Things are getting better in Vasilitsa resort every year. Apart from the 2 chair lifts there are now 6 surface lifts (3 surface, 2 baby and 1 new connecting lift). So total lifts:8. The mountain is very beautiful, usually gets a lot of snow, nice powder. The best of all is the off-piste, nice powder paths between the trees and excellent sunny days! The snow season is usually between Christmas until the beginning of April. There are 3 chalets with restaurants and bars and also the nearest village Smixi has some nice tavernas (greek traditional restaurants) and rooms for rent.(and also some bars)

Ok lets be honest, there are no snowparks there. There is only one hole that it is supposed to be a halfpipe. No dragon Pipe availiable so no halfpipe, No rails, no jumps. The term "snowpark" does not exist. However the natural terrain is very nice with many nice spots where someone can create his own jumps. So you have to spend one of day from your holidays to create some jumps if you want to enjoy snowboarding. The staff is really disorganized and not helpfull at all.

The good things are: Nice natural terain, trees, good quality of snow - during the mid of the season vasilitsa has the biggest amount of snow regarding to other Greek resorts, nice freeriding but the resort is so small that your biggest ride will last 5 to 10 minutes. The lift pass if very cheap and the season pass costs only 150 euros.

The dad things Are: Although that Vasilitsa has many snowboarders there is nothing done there for them. Not even a small typical snowpard with 2 or 3 jumps.
The staff has no clue about tourism and friendship. Most of the time, because of the big depth of snow, one of the major connecting lifts (2 Seat chair lift) does not work.
There is no connection within the lifts so in most of the cases you must start walking untill you get to the next lift (if you want to go from the distrato lift to Christos Migdanis you must take a long walk; there is one small connecting lift but the staff are too bored to turn it on) When it gets really crowded there is nothing done from the staff to make your life easier. In most of the cases and especially during the week only some of the lifts are working. Some lifts work once or twice during the season!!! ( Timfaia and Christos Migdanis Lifts )

I have been visiting Vasilitsa for 7 years now and during all these years, nothing has been done there to make things better. Ok the food is nice, the wine and the tsipouro are cool, but dont forget that Vasilitsa is not a restaurant but a snowresort.

    Snowcat from Greece

Just came back from a 5day stay in Vasilitsa. By far the most beautiful resort I have visited in Greece. Great scenery, very interesting pistes of all levels, very good quality of snow and cheap. Completely worth the 6 hour drive from Athens. Unfortunately there is not much snow right now. Just adequate to ski for another 1-2 days max, if it doesn't snow in the meantime.
2 perfectly located chalets right on the pistes - incredible view!. Major disadvantage: the service at the chalet & lifts. Polite but completely disorganized and too bored to help you. Nevertheless, I would definitely recommend.

One of the best snow resorts in Greece ,Vasilitsa Grevenon, is the ultimate destination for the Greek snowboarders , skiers and nature-lovers.More than 16 km course for skiing(12 courses) ,one snowboard park for freestylers, plenty of untrodden terrains for freeriders and carvers , great nature and of course weekly happenings with night-skiing , parties and snowraft(!!!!!) an exciting new sport first invented in Vasilitsa . You can stay in the resort's hostile facilities or in the traditional hotels close to Vasilitsa.Enjoy the good wine of the Grevena area ,the local meat specialities and of course the mushroums.66 different species of mushrooms makes Grevena one of the richest mushrooms garden in the world(go to 'avlais' to eat them-never alone , many mushrooms are dangerous!!!) .13 euros per day for the lift , 10 for the students kai 5 for the kids , 30-150 per night for a room with breakfast.45 km from Grevena ,180 km from Thessaloniki (Egnatia highway) , 420 km from Athens (kalampaka).Take your friends and enjoy your time in Vasilitsa!
